Designing a Small Design System

You don’t need a hundred components. You need a handful of tokens and the discipline to use them.

You don’t need a hundred components. You need a handful of tokens and the discipline to use them. Ours started as three pages in a notebook and still fits on one screen.

Start with tokens

TokenValuesRule
ColourInk, paper, one accentAccent for actions only
Spacing4, 8, 16, 24, 40, 64Never in between
TypeTwo families, five sizesOne size per job

Components come later, once you’ve seen the same pattern three times. Until then, copy and paste is a perfectly good design system.
