Building a Fast Website in 2026

Speed is a feature. The short checklist we run through on every project before it goes live.

Speed is a feature. A fast site feels trustworthy, ranks better and costs less to run. Here is the short checklist we run through on every project before launch — none of it is exotic, and all of it matters.

The checklist

  • Serve pages from the edge cache, and purge on publish
  • Ship modern image formats with proper srcset and sizes
  • Keep JavaScript off pages that don’t need it
  • Preload the hero image and the main font
  • Measure with real-user data, not just lab scores

Budgets we hold ourselves to

MetricTargetWhy
Largest Contentful Paint< 1.8 sThe page looks ready
Interaction to Next Paint< 150 msTaps feel instant
Cumulative Layout Shift< 0.05Nothing jumps around
JavaScript on articles< 50 kBReading needs no framework

A tiny example

The fastest request is the one you never make.

Would love a follow-up on image formats — AVIF vs WebP in practice?

Good idea, Marco. It’s on the list for next month.
